I first got into yoga because I needed an extra credit at my university to be considered a "full time" student (and because Madonna was doing it!). I fell in love with yoga after my first class... I felt so alive, so relaxed, so clear and joyful afterwards. I was hooked! I had a feeling that this yoga thing was made for ME.
As a kid I had tried some dance and gymnastics and played lots of sports growing up, but this just felt like a warm, welcome home. My instructor told me that I was good at it - and there was a workshop-thingy coming up, would I like to learn more? Ummm, yeah!!! I signed up and felt psyched until the opening circle when we had to introduce ourselves...
"Hi, my name is so-and-so and I've been teaching for 2 years." "Hi, my name is such-and-such and I've been teaching for 5 years." *panic arose* "What the hell am I doing here?" was all I could think... Yes, I had inadvertently signed up for my very first yoga teacher-training. But by the end of the training, I felt amazing and ready to go teach my community service hours (a requirement of the programme to obtain certification).
Fast forward to 2017 and I now have my very own studio, a long-time dream of mine, doing what I love.
My teaching style emphasises building a safe, sustainable yoga practice to help heal the body and improve posture (less traditional, more exercise science-based). Once our bodies start to feel better, it's easier for us to observe the mind chatter - acknowledging, accepting and letting go of the unnecessary to tap into the connection with our true power and guidance within.
I got into Pilates Reformer in 2014 when I suffered a debilitating back injury. I could feel how beneficial it was right away, so when I was able, I completed the STOTT PILATES training (2015). I chose to get one machine and run private sessions so that I could focus on the individual and give them 110%, making sure they get exactly what they need. It’s been tempting to get more machines (more machines = more money... I am a business owner after all) but I decided that to truly make it a mind/body experience, private sessions were a better choice for me.
I'm an avid learner, attending trainings with world-class teachers like Duncan Peak and Tiffany Cruikshank, to keep on top of research and developments in the field. I strive to make people feel safe, supported and welcome in my classes. I truly believe that our health is our wealth and when we aren’t healthy, we can’t enjoy the things we love in life. I teach my classes and private sessions with that simple philosophy in mind.
Some of my yoga pictures have been featured on Italian Vanity Fair online (#52), YogaTrail.com and Bay Weekender.

"Amy came along at just the right time to help me see there was more to yoga than just the postures. Thanks for that!"
- Greg; Iowa, USA
"With Ohope being such a small NZ town, I didn't think I'd find a yoga teacher, let alone one as great as Amy. Her students vary greatly between older students, young students, and beginners to intermediate levels, and Amy caters for each and every one of us with compassion and patience. She makes yoga accessible for everyone. " - Debbie, Ohope
"Loved every class! I absolutely loved every class I had with Amy while I was pregnant--because of her teachings I was able to have a beautiful natrual birth and I was lucky enough to be able to attend one post-natal class once my baby was born. Amy made me feel very comfortable and safe in both classes...Loved it!!!" - Georgia; NSW, Australia
